Female Odd Couple
Strongest Readers Theatre Opening Ever!
The Rep is happy to report that this year's readers
theatre season is off to a rollicking start! Monday, October 15th saw the
largest opening audience in the readers theatre program's five-year history. Nearly
75 people sat in the Reynolds Middle School Theatre
and laughed aloud at Neil Simon's hilarious famale version of his popular play
The Odd Couple.
"Obviously we're thrilled at the turnout," said Operations Manager
Harold Phillips. "We've always hoped that our readers theatre program could
provide an inexpensive, easy night out for the East County community; it seems that
people know we're here and are making us a regular part of their Monday night plans."
Mt. Hood Rep's readers theatre season features a
play reading on the 3rd Monday of the month from October through April. "The program
exposes our audience to different plays than they might normally
see during The Rep's American Classics Theatre Festival,"
said Associate Artistic Director Trish Egan, "and it
gives us a chance to work with new directors and actors from throughout the Portland area.
I hope that we keep seeing audience numbers like this; there are a lot of great
plays on tap in the coming season."

Mt. Hood Rep Audiences Rise
By 17%
The numbers are still being tabulated, but all indicators are that this year's
Eighth Annual American Classics Theatre Festival
was a rousing success!
Nearly 1700 people visited the
Mt. Hood Community College Theatre Arts Building in July and August to see
The Rep's productions of You Can't
Take It With You, Vanities,
and The Return of Sunday Night By
The Philco. Audience feedback was tremendous; The Rep received a lot of
mail through its mailbox
singing the festival's praises. "I attended all 3 plays," wrote one patron, "and
was blessed with all of them."
"This increase in patronage shows that The Rep is becoming a viable entertainment
option for many more people inside and outside of East County," said Operations Manager
Harold Phillips. "For years East County has hosted a number of cultural events,
including the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival, The Gresham Arts Walk, and the Downtown Street Dance. We believe
that the American
Classics Theatre Festival is a welcome addition to these other events, and
offers patrons a wider variety of entertainment options during the summer."

Oregonian Prints Three MHRTC Stories in Two Days
It's been a busy week for Mt. Hood Repertory Theatre Company in Portland's own
daily newspaper, The Oregonian.
On Wednesday, August 4 the paper printed a review of our
American Classics Festival production of
Vanities. This was quickly followed by two articles in the Oregonian's
Metro East "Weekly" section on Thursday, August 4: one article profiled the on-stage
and off-stage romance of Trish Egan and Harold Phillips in The Rep's production
of You Can't Take It With You; the other focused on The Rep's efforts to
honor longstanding friend, volunteer and board member Zathoe McBeth with
commemorative performances and a special scholarship in her name.

Mt. Hood Rep Seeking Summer Technical Interns
Each year, Mt. Hood Repertory Theatre Company selects a group of students
to work with our professional company to help produce our
American Classics Theatre Festival. Students accepted into the program
are eligible for college credit through
Mt. Hood Community College (may be transferrable to other institutions -
current college students should check with their registrars), and a stipend for
their summer's work.
The Rep is currently seeking students to fill these internships for
our 2004 Festival. This is an exciting opportunity to work side-by-side with
theatre professionals and gain valuable experience in the world of professional
theatre. Those candidates selected will work with The Rep this summer to
build the sets for our summer offerings, and may also be asked to help run one
of our three repertory productions.
Candidates for the program must be at least 16 years old, must be available to work
days, evenings and weekends from June 19 through August 17, and must have
reliable transportation.
Interested students should send a cover letter and resume (if they have one)
to

Summer Internship Coordinator
PO Box 1644
Gresham, OR 97030
or send your materials via email to .
Submission deadline is June 7. Upon receipt of the student's materials an interview
time will be set up.
Don't delay! This is your opportunity to spend this summer learning to work in
professional theatre!

and graphical representations of the three plays produced this summer: You

Schedule Change for March Readers Theatre
Once again, The Rep is forced to change our readers theatre schedule.
We were planning on presenting a reading of the Pulitzer Prize winning
Anna In The Tropics, directed by Andres Alcala.
Regretfully, the rights to this exciting new play have been reserved by the publisher
while the New York production is is being staged.
But don't dispair, readers theatre fans! Alcala has decided instead to stage
a reading of the 1991 Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning comedy Lost In Yonkers,
by Neil Simon. Response to The Rep's last reading of a Simon play,
Brighton Beach Memoirs, was so great that we're expecting quite a large turnout
for the March 15 reading. We hope we see you there!

Schedule Changed For February Readers Theatre
Sad news for fans of Jane Wagner's Search For Signs of Intelligent Life In the Universe.
The Rep had planned a staged reading of the play in February. However,
we were recently informed that the rights for this play are under restriction
and The Rep cannot proceed with this production.
Associate Artistic Director Trish Egan is
working with guest director Debera Ann Lund on
an alternative selection. Mt. Hood Rep goers will remember Lund for her work in
directing last year’s Readers Theatre production of Animal Crackers.
The selection will fall under this year’s theme, “And The Winner Is…,”
which features popular stage plays that have won prestigious awards.

Peter Baker To Replace Antonio Sonera in Born Yesterday Cast
Due to a scheduling conflict, Antonio Sonera has been forced to drop
out of the cast for this summer's production of Born Yesterday.
The Rep feels very fortunate that one of our favorite actors, Peter Baker,
was available to step into the role of idealistic reporter Paul Verrall. "Peter
Baker has been one of the mainstay actors of the Rep," says director
Tobias Andersen. "He's appeared as the enigmatic Simon Stimson in Our Town
and as Prosecuting Attorney Tom Davenport in last season's Inherit the Wind.
We feel fortunate to have him aboard with us as we rehearse Born Yesterday."
Rehearsals for Born Yesterday have already gotten underway; the cast has
embraced Peter as one of their own. After watching Peter play so many parts for
The Rep over the years, we're expecting great things from him.

March 11, 2003: "Play It Again Sam" coming in April
"How can anyone not like the combination of Woody and Bogie in one play?"
Mt. Hood Repertory Theatre Company wraps up their 2002/03 season of
play readings with Woody Allen's Play It Again, Sam! directed by
Peter Baker.
Play It Again, Sam! (1969) was Woody Allen's first Broadway success. The
play, which was later made into
a movie, is an ironic bow to 1940s cinema, Hollywood's golden age. Timeless
scenes from films like Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon are remembered, as the
play's main character, Allan Felix, constantly confuses his rather prosaic
reality with the glittering world of the movie screen. Of course, this makes for
a host of awkward situations, which are then handled with the notorious humor
that movie fans everywhere have come to associate with Woody Allen.
Director Peter Baker was recently seen in Mt. Hood Rep's January
reading of Twelve Angry Men and many will remember his performance as
prosecuting attorney Davenport in last season's Inherit the Wind. Baker is
co-founder of Outside the Box Productions, a small, edgy local theatre
production company. He has also played the role of Allan in Play It Again, Sam!
on stage.
Play It Again, Sam! is the final Readers Theatre production for Mt.
Hood Rep. This year's theme, "From Stage to Screen," featured popular stage
plays that became successful films. Watch for the Rep's annual fundraiser in May
and mark your calendars for the American Classics Theatre Festival opening August
8, 2003 with the great American classic comedy, Born Yesterday.
Play It Again, Sam! will be read at the Reynolds Middle School

February 17, 2003: "Animal Crackers" coming in March
It's time for a good laugh with the "maddest comedy of them all"!
Mt. Hood Repertory Theatre Company starts the wrap up of their 2002/03
season of play readings with George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind's Animal Crackers,
directed by Debera-Ann Lund.
Animal Crackers was written in 1929 and is set just before the stock
market crash of that same year. This hysterical satire on society is one of the
most popular vehicles for the four Marx brothers, Julius, Leonard, Adolph (Arthur),
and Herbert. Later the sibling quartet became more commonly known by their names
Groucho, Chico, Harpo, and Zeppo.
Debera-Ann Lund recently directed the critically acclaimed Rashomon for
Theatre Vertigo.
Ms. Lund is fulfilling a lifelong dream in directing this staged reading of her
favorite Marx Brothers' film. An accomplished actress, she was recently seen as
"Ursula" in the Portland Center Stage
production of Much Ado About Nothing.
Animal Crackers is the sixth of seven Readers Theatre productions to be
held once a month through April. This year's theme, "From Stage
to Screen," features popular stage plays that became successful films.
Animal Crackers will be read at the Reynolds Middle School Theatre:
7:00 PM, Monday, March 17th
1200 NE 201st at Halsey, Fairview (Click Here for a map)

January 21, 2003: Sam Shephard's "Curse of The Starving Class" Coming in February
Mt. Hood Repertory Theatre Company continues its 2002/03 season of play
readings with Sam Shepard's "Curse of the Starving Class," directed by Robert
Tollefson.
Reviews say that this is one of Shepard's greatest plays. The play is his most
comic and excoriating study of the American family. It's a tough, edgy show that
digs into the themes most important to Shepard: identity and roots. The characters
in the play are starving for meaning and individuality in a modern world that
refuses to recognize anything but the societal standard. The dazzling language
Shepard uses really makes his plays stand out. Nobody in the American theatre uses
language like Shepard. The muscular, lyrical and completely American way his
characters speak raise the plays to a height of mythic reality.
Robert Tollefson is a freelance director and set designer in the Portland area

"Curse of the Starving Class" is the fifth of seven Readers Theatre productions
to be held once a month through April. This year's theme, "From Stage to Screen,"

September 21, 2002:  City of Gresham Proposes New Arts
and Cultural Center
The City of Gresham is currently in the master plan development stage for the
proposed performing arts & cultural center to be located in Historic Downtown
Gresham. Plans call for a 300-seat theatre, a 60-stall space to house Gresham's
farmer's market, visual and performing arts classrooms, meeting spaces, gardens,
and an outdoor plaza.
The current recommendation is for a "black box style" configuration that would
allow for a variety of activities and events. Even though Mt. Hood Rep would
not be able to use this style of theatre for its annual American Classics
Festival, we fully support the development of a facility that meets the needs of
our community.

August 1, 2002:  Trish Egan
joins Mt. Hood Rep as Associate Artistic Director
Local actor, director, and educator Trish Egan, director of this year's American
Classics Festival production of Inherit The Wind, has agreed to join the staff
of Mt. Hood Repertory Theatre Company as Associate Artistic Director.
Egan, who won a Portland Critics Circle Award (or Drammy) for her 2000 performance
in Stark Raving Theatre's Richard III, recently moved to the East Metro area
from Southwest Portland. She formed a close working relationship with The Rep's Artistic
Director, Tobias Andersen, when both appeared
in Tygres Heart Shakespeare Co.'s 2001 production of The Tempest. The scope of that relationship
grew during pre-production planning for last summer's production of Inherit The Wind, and by the
end of the summer, Andersen had asked her to come on board.
"The opportunity to work with Tobias Andersen," Egan says, "and to play a part in
the growth of The Rep is very exciting! I look forward to watching the growth of the
company, and to helping nurture audience growth in East Metro."
