Turn on the radio today and on the AM dial it rants on both ends of the political spectrum, and while one camp may have a better sense of humor than the other, both are full of their own brand of fire and brimstone. FM teems with music suited to nearly everyone's tastes, except perhaps those with a penchant for polka. There's brainy talk here, folksy chat there, and on both frequencies and on all stations, plenty of cynicism.

What's missing?

The stories.

The secrets and lies, the silliness and suspense, the tales we were told by all those great characters: Sam Spade, Molly Goldberg, Fibber McGee. These were friends who shared their hilarious, scary, romantic lives with us every week. No wonder we miss them.

Tonight, for just a little while, they've all returned to our shared living room. For a fleeting time we'll peek into their lives again, and for a too-brief moment, forget today's radio, in fact, forget the world, with its clamor and din and remember instead a time of innocence and joy.
