Presenting our 2006-2007
Readers Theatre Season

Classic Plays From The 1930's - 2000's

"...to hold as 'twere the mirror up to nature... and the very age and body of the time his form..." -Hamlet, Act III.

Like all great forms of art, the literature of the theatre reflects the particular world in which it is set, and provides insight to the inhabitants of the time. This 2006-2007 Readers Theatre season presents a series of plays which are representative of a particular decade, from the 1930s to the present. Mt. Hood Rep is pleased to present its seventh season of staged readings. Readers Theatre is a relaxed and entertaining medium in which the area's finest professional actors use the words of the play, their voices, and the audience's imagination to bring these stories to life.

The 1930's: Address Unknown
By Katherine Kressmann Taylor
Adapted for the stage by Frank Dunlop
Directed By Mary McDonald Lewis Monday, September 18
7 pm.
In the Great Depression the American dream had become a nightmare, but the United States and its democracy survived. Germany's did not. This chilling drama shows that the power of a madman to tap into the yearning for a leader to restore lost prosperity and national pride is as pertinent as ever. Actors will be Tobias Andersen and Michael Mendelson.
The 1940's: Biloxi Blues
by Neil Simon
Directed By Trisha Pancio Armour Monday, October 16
7 pm.
This Tony Award winning Broadway comedy follows Eugene, the hero of Brighton Beach Memoirs, as he is sent to army training camp in Biloxi, Mississippi during the Second World War where he - as did many Americans - comes to learn about the wide world around him.

** Adult content and language, suitable for teens and older.
The 1950's: Sabrina Fair
by Samuel Taylor
Directed By Debera Ann Lund Monday, November 20
7 pm.
The end of the war brought thousands of young servicemen back home to start new families in new homes with new jobs. The era of gray flannel suits and dresses with pinched in waists and high heels is represented by this "comedy of manners" that the NY Times called "a modern version of the Cinderella fable." Made into the film Sabrina, starring Audrey Hepburn.
The 1960's: A Thousand Clowns
by Herb Gardner
Directed By Tobias Andersen Monday, December 18
7 pm.
No longer content to be images of the generation ahead of them, young people wanted revolutionary ways of thinking. In this rollicking comedy, Murray Burns, a cheerful eccentric, is raising his 12-year old nephew and believes in living life fully, even if that means going to the movies instead of looking for a job.
The 1970's: Strange Snow
by Stephen Metcalf
Directed By Patrick Wohlmut Monday, January 15
7 pm.
The years of war, social realignment and presidential impeachment proceedings give rise to this award winning drama of two young Vietnam veterans and their harrowing readjustment to civilian life.

** Adult language
The 1980's: The Shadow Box
By Michael Cristofer
Directed By Jeff Puuka Monday, February 19
7 pm.
The Shadow Box: The "ME" Generation. The AIDS epidemic. Three people surrounded by loved ones, all trying to face and make sense of death, and discover the importance of life and love. The 1990's: The Search For Signs of Intelligent Life In The Universe
By Jane Wagner
Directed By Joyce Wood Monday, March 19
7 pm.
They may all have their cell phones by now, but they are still the funniest characters to ever appear on the stage: Katie, the snobbish society woman; Chrissy, the perennial incompetent; Paul the bodybuilding divorcee; Trudy, the bag lady… the hilarious creations of Lily Tomlin.
The 2000's: The Guys
By Anne Nelson
Directed By Hollyanna McCollum Monday, April 16
7 pm.
"You couldn't create another sequence for his life that leads to me. After September 11th, all over the city, people jumped tracks." A writer helps a fire captain write eulogies for men in his company who died in the World Trade Center.
